Recently more and more celebrities adopted graphic-designed clothing inspired by the French artist Alice Maynard, still unknown yesterday. Last week, the NASA even announced during a press conference the arrival of new space suits drawn by this French artist.

Facing this wave of geometrical forms made in France, Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective whose moustache is famous and who lives in London, always quick to express himself, explained : “I have always loved art, is this a sufficient justification? It energizes myself, it helps me thinking right and putting my investigations in order. Moreover, Alice Maynard's artworks have regularity and order, which isn't disagreeable to me.” For his part, the Dalai-Lama, with his triangle patterns dress, pointed out that art often went hand in hand with spirituality in History. Even the Stormtroopers, who changed their armors three months ago, revealed they like their new graphics very much. As for Batman, always taciturn and hard to approach, he declared : “I like my new suit, but I don't understand why the press is harassing me about it! Journalists never asked the Joker why he wore red lipstick!”

The NASA new generation suit has been tested for several weeks now, and also seems to delight the American astronaut interviewed by our journalist, in exclusivity.

Why invest in an esthetic change of space suits?

When this project was announced by the direction, we were all very surprised. This news was completely unexpected and made the most of us quite sceptic. Space suits had been white for so many years! We had never thought that it could change! But our manager immediately explained to us that this decision was motivated by a need for renewal of the NASA. According to a recent survey, the NASA brand hasn't aged well in public opinion. It is nevertheless a showcase of what the United States do best! The NASA is always at the forefront of technology ; nowadays it also has to be at the forefront of communication, and to convey a trendy image.

Has this change a scientific interest?

Absolutely. This change, initiated by the NASA Fashion department, found an echo with technical designers and engineers in charge of space suits, specialists of Space and potential interactions with others forms of life. Wearing an artistic visual can, according to them, influence in a very positive way the first impression made on aliens that we could meet during a mission. We could, even without speaking, give them a modern, but also a sensitive message. Don't forget that the NASA recently discovered a new planet that might hold life… Maybe E.T. isn't so far away from us now!

What do you think about the pattern chosen by the NASA designers?

It is important to precise that the designers didn't choose the pattern by themselves. During the main meeting when the new space suit project was exposed to us, they presented us with five models made by five different artists, and then we had a few days to vote. So everyone had a say. One week later, the counting revealed that French artist Alice Maynard's project had been chosen with a majority of votes. Moreover, because you seem to really want to know, yes, I voted for her! That's the graphic performance of her artwork that I like a lot. Simple and geometrical, in the same time artistic and mathematic. And art and math are universal, aren't they? So the aliens could understand this language without any problem!

Why didn't you choose an American artist's work?

There were two American artists in the selection. But us astronauts, we go into space, we talk several languages and, from up there, everything is relativized. We don't mind about state politics frontiers, and the Earth doesn't look bigger than a foot-ball. The world is our country, and Men are our family. We chose the artwork that affected us the most, regardeless of nationality. Man, woman, American, European, Asian… once you've been up, you are changed forever, you know that we are all the same, and how little we are…

Have you tested the new space suit during a simulation, has it changed something for you?

The fact that the space suit isn't plain anymore hasn't got any real technical consequences, it still has white on it and so, its visibility hasn't changed. The advantage will be moral, our “uniforms” will be nicer, that's all! And it is a sufficient reason to be delighted!
